Called "Spring of the Summer Sky" by Native Americans, Blue Spring is one of Missouri's most beautiful. At 310 feet deep, it is also the deepest, and is usually a vivid blue color. The color is caused by the depth of the water and by dissolved minerals. The color may change depending on factors such as the amount of storm run-off and even the time of day. Ranked as the 8th largest Missouri spring it is conceded to ahve the deepest blue color of any. Daily flow averages 87 million gallons. It is a Missouri Natual Area, a special designation given to areas of outstanding beauty or scientific interest. The 17 acre area around the spring is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, whilte the Current River and the surrounding area are administired by the National Park Service as part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.
