Rau studied under Paul Dubois at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and in 1911 won the Prix de Rome. He executed war memorials at seven Belgian cities, and did portraits and independent works. The baby is cradled with tender but unaffected solicitude in the lap formed by the mother's crossed legs, both the mature and infant figures being represented quite naturally. The decisive contours, fullness of volume, and serene spirit suggest affinity with Aristide Maillol.
In accordance with Henry Shaw's will, the Cleveland Avenue Gatehouse was constructed in 1895 as a residence for the Mausoleum groundskeeper. The Board of Trustees thought the gate would also allow overflow admission to crowds, although it was never used for this purpose. Various employees lived here through the 20th century. The gatehouse is now closed to the public, awaiting restoration. Architect: George I. Barnett, who also designed the Linnean House, Tower Grove House, and Shaw's town house, now part of the Shoenberg Administration Building.
