The May 18, 1990 eruption impacted federal, state, and private lands visible from this site. On the valley sides, blown down trees on state and private timberlands have been salvage logged and replanted with fast-growing Douglas-fir and noble fir trees. The alder forest in the valley below is located within Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, where life is being allowed to progress at nature's pace. This developing forest is slowly paving the way for a diverse evergreen forest. Scientists studing the return of life in the Monument are constantly reminded that nature knows no human boundaries.
